The historic Barbican, with its ancient cobbles and warehouse style buildings, clustered around Sutton Harbour, is probably Plymouth's most popular nautical landmark. Bustling with life, the Barbican is packed with art galleries and antique shops, wine bars, bistros, restaurants and live music venues. The Barbican can be viewed from Clear Waters and is easily reached on foot via the year round Mount Batten water taxi. The question whos turn is it to drive? need never be asked again.
In pure contrast to this historic setting, Plymouth is quickly becoming recognised as a superb sailing centre, and there are now over half a dozen excellent modern marinas, providing berths and up to date facilities for every size and shape of sailing craft.
Plymouth has also built a fine reputation for hosting world-class sailing and powerboat events - the greatest single-handed transatlantic adventure sets out from the breakwater and is organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in the world. Beautiful classic yachts can be seen tacking serenely across the bay during Plymouth Maritime Festival, whilst during the weekend of the World Offshore Powerboat Championships, Plymouth Sound buzzes with the adrenaline of purebred racing machines. Plymouth also boasts two of the finest diving centres in the country and the National Marine Aquarium.
